THE NEW 7TH DISTRICT
New districts will be used for the first time in the 2022 midterm election. The current 3rd Congressional District will become the newly configured 7th Congressional District.
Following the 2020 Census, Arizona was apportioned nine congressional districts, which was unchanged from the number it had after the 2010 census. However, district lines are redrawn every 10 years following the completion of the census.
The new district is located in the southern portion and southwestern corner of the state. All of Santa Cruz County and portions of Cochise, Maricopa, Pima, Pinal, and Yuma counties are included in the district.
The urban center of the district contains the central, south, and west sides of the city of Tucson. The population within the district is predominantly working-class families, from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds. The majority of Tucson’s Hispanic, African American, and urban Native American residents live in the new district.
The district will share nearly 350 miles of border with Mexico (approximately 93% of Arizona’s border) and extends from Bisbee and Douglas in Cochise County to the California border to include Somerton, San Luis, and parts of Yuma County.
The district is also home to four sovereign nations: the Cocopah, Pascua Yaqui, Quechan, and Tohono O’odham.
